Magna Moralia: Critical Edition, Translation and Commentary
The Magna Moralia is one of the three ethical works attributed to Aristotle in antiquity, next to the Eudemian and Nicomachean Ethics. However, the Magna Moralia has not be studied as extensively as the other two treatises, with research focusing largely on the question of authenticity and much less on the ethical theory and its occasional variance with them. Our project aims, first, to establish a new critical edition of the Magna Moralia, building on earlier work by Dirlmeier, Brockmann, and Johnstone. We will also offer a fresh English translation on the basis of the new text. Secondly, we will prepare a philosophical commentary to shed light both on the ethical theory of the Magna Moralia and on its relation to Aristotle's other ethical works. The project will thus enable a future re-appreciation of the Magna Moralia, while contributing to a better understanding of the development of Aristotelian ethics.
Research results as well as the announcements of workshops, conferences and collaborations will be posted here regularly. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us!
